A pair of antique, late 1700's engravings on laid paper of Romeo and Juliet. Engraved by Philip Dawe, Found only 1 museum reference for these images.
Frames are older and appears to have an acid free backing when I took apart for clues. Dawe was most active in London in the late 1700's. He worked under William Hogarth and on the back of one of the prints there is writing and I see Hogarth written and crossed out.
Romeo is depicted with a lethal vile of poison in his hand, about to sacrifice himself. A quote from act 5 scene 5 is included in the margin, "Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on the dashing rocks thy seasick, weary bark: No more: heres to my love!". Juliet is also depicted with a vile of poison. Engravings are in great condition and are framed under glass. Romeo measures approximately 9.6'' x 11.5'' and Juliet measures approximately 9.5'' x 11''. Please review all images.
